Belden Amoung Industry's First Cable Producers to Achieve FieldBus Foundation H 1 Cable Registration

Belden has recently announced that one of the company’s family of IndustrialTuff®DataBus® Cables for FOUNDATION™ fieldbus applications is among the industry’s first to achieve registration to the FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 Cable Test Specification. The Fieldbus Foundation is a global not-for-profit corporation consisting of leading process end users and automation companies.

FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 network is an all-digital, serial, two-way communications protocol that standardizes the interconnection of field devices. In November 2007, the Fieldbus Foundation’s new H1 Cable Test Specification was released to provide users with increased assurance that their industrial cabling infrastructure will provide robust and reliable physical layer performance.

Belden attained H1 registration for part number 3076F. This IndustrialTuff DataBus cable is a Type A 18 AWG stranded cable featuring a polyolefin insulation, Orange or Intrinsically Safe Blue PVC jacket, and 100 percent Beldfoil® shield with TC drain wire. For a cable to qualify, its manufacturers must conduct testing and submit successful test results based on the IEC 61158- 2:2003 standard for Type A cable, which includes (but is not limited to): impedance, capacitance unbalance, connector pin-outs, and attenuation. Registration signifies that the cable is suitable for any H1 fieldbus application, including high temperature and corrosive environments.

Commenting on the registration, Frank Koditek, Belden’s industrial line product manager, notes:“Belden strongly supports the FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 cable registration process because it gives our customers additional assurance that our Type A cables will deliver the quality and performance we promise. And, we credit the Fieldbus Foundation for its ongoing dedication to establishing measurable standards for physical layer requirements, since the cabling infrastructure is the cornerstone of reliable network performance.”

Belden offers a comprehensive line of IndustrialTuff DataBus cables for FOUNDATION fieldbus industrial networking applications. All Belden fieldbus cables meet DataBus for Fieldbus IEC 61158-2 (ISA/SP-50) specifications.

Belden Offers an Industry First for SDI/HD Coaxial Cables        Sep 2008

Belden has designed SDI/HD Coaxial Cables with design features that make using compression connectors faster, easier and more secure, an industry first.

With the proliferation of plasma and LCD screens, there is growing market demand for high resolution video in a host of applications, including:

• AV presentations and whiteboards for meetings and classroom training

• Projector presentation systems

• Teleconferencing

• Closed-circuit surveillance and security systems

• Video for home theaters

• Video pick-up in sports bars, casinos, racinos and other commercial venues

• High Resolution Surveillance Video

• SDI, video, and Broadband HDTV

• Broadband Internet Delivery

Concurrently, AV and security system integrators are increasingly selecting compression connectors, which can be problematic when used with traditional foil design coaxial cables. The foil can bunch up when inserted into compression connectors or, if the foil is left in place, foil “stringers” can result which can short to the cable’s center conductor.

The Belden Solution

Belden has designed its System Integrator Digital Coax cables especially for use with compression connectors. The cable design features a foil shield that is securely bonded to the jacket and is self-removing during preparation for connection, thus making installation easier and eliminating the risk of foil stringers and shorting. Belden

is the first cable manufacturer to offer system integrators this unique cable solution.

Available in Four Designs, Five Colors

The new Belden System Integrator Digital Coax cable line includes four products: 1355R and 1355P (RG-59/U Type), and 1356R and 1356P (RG-6/U Type).

All cables are sweep tested to 3GHz, and all guarantee -15dB Return Loss (RL) performance. The cable design includes a tinned copper braid shield (85 percent coverage) and bonded Duofoil® shield (100 percent coverage) for effective shielding

in higher frequency applications. The foil is placed over the braid and securely bonded to the jacket so it is self-removing during cable preparation.

The cables are available in five colors: Black, White, Red, Green and Blue.

Belden Provides Broadband Solutions                                    May 2008

Belden manufactures wire and cable broadband solutions that provide the bandwidth needed to build the infrastructure for today’s CableTV and satellite dish technology.

At a recent Press Briefing, Theo van Rijn, Product Marketing Operations Manager for Belden EMEA, gave an overview of the company’s capabilities in the CATV or Provider market.“CATV is a system of providing television to consumers via radio frequency signals transmitted to televisions through fixed optical fibers or coaxial cables. As CATV is becoming more established, FM radio programming, high-speed Internet, telephony and similar non television services are also be provided using the same bandwith.

"With wireless communication becoming a part of everyone’s life, people communicate more and more through wireless networks such as cellular phones, TV Broadcasting and WLAN. Increasingly, the networks serving them become Hybrid Fiber Coax.

“Belden has a complete range of products for this market. It includes one of the most comprehensive, economical and up-to-date selections of reliable 75 Ohm and 50 Ohm coaxial cable products on the market today. The distribution and drop coaxes feature Belden’s innovative, high performance Duobond Plus® shielding or Belden’s Duobond® II shield. Belden Duobond Plus® (Tri-shield) Cables have consistently outperformed the more elaborate quad-shielded cables.”

Developments

“Current projects in Fiber to the Home are driven by CATV operators. This is not a rapid change over as CATV operators want to extend the broadband coax life as long as possible. Telco operators are also slowly moving towards the fiber to the home, as they want to extend the Twisted Pair life as long as possible. The true drivers are new providers as they are looking to build completely new networks with extremely high bandwidth.

“Key considerations are the growing demand for higher bandwidth. The triple play use of that bandwidth: for telephone, internet and TV or HDTV, and the ongoing split between the roles of the network provider and content provider. Many countries – for instance in Eastern Europe – are now beginning to create their infrastructure.

“Belden has an impressive list of reference cases and a strong tradition of moving with the market to meet new needs for increased bandwidth and easy installation.”

Belden Helps to Drive Industrial Automation                                  May 2008

Belden cables are being widely adopted by industrial users for the Process Industry and Factory Floor Automation. The company offers a range of Process Automation (PA) cables for use in instrumentation, regulation and control technologies. PROFIBUS PA technology allows safe transmission of data and power on the line. This enables the user to expand the possibilities of a state-of-the-art control system.

At a recent Press Briefing, Charles Ingham, Sales Director for Belden EMEA, provided an overview of the latest Belden products for industrial automation: “Belden cables have been widely installed in many key sectors, such as the oil & gas industry, chemical processing, paper & pulp manufacturing and processing; and the metals industry.

"Process Automation is used extensively by heavy industries who manufacture in continuous process. Over the years, pneumatic systems have migrated to 4- 20 mAmp systems and proprietary solutions; today they use open digital systems. The Belden range of Process Automation cable solutions offers cost, quality and performance benefits to everyone in the value chain - manufacturers, global companies with assets in multiple countries, main instrument builders (MIVs) and EPC contractors.

“Our customers are finding that they are benefiting from reduced maintenance costs, improved maintenance efficiency and a reduction in equipment life cycle costs.

The most significant potential to save money on is preventive instrument maintenance which is also the largest post on the costs side. Studies show that 63% of instrument maintenance labor results in no action taken; a large waste of resources.”

Process control

For industrial process control instruments, analog 4-20 mA and 10-50 mA current loops are commonly used for analog signaling, with 4 mA representing the lowest end of the range and 20 mA the highest. The key advantages of the current loop are that the accuracy of the signal is not affected by voltage drop in the interconnecting wiring, and that the loop can supply operating power to the device. Even if there is significant electrical resistance in the line, the current loop transmitter will maintain the proper current, up to its maximum voltage capability. The live-zero represented by 4 mA allows the receiving instrument to detect some failures of the loop, and also allows transmitter devices to be powered by the same current loop (called two-wire transmitters). Such instruments are used to measure pressure, temperature, flow, pH or other process variables.A current loop can also be used to control a valve positioner or other output actuator. An analog current loop can be converted to a voltage input with a precision resistor. Since input terminals of instruments may have one side of the current loop input tied to the chassis ground (earth), analog isolators may be required when connecting several devices in series.

Discrete automation

“In addition to process control, industrial automation also encompasses discrete automation or factory floor automation, in facilities where the production process is not continuous but in batches, typical examples are: automotive production and assembly plants and pharmaceutical and laboratory facilities.

“In these circumstances modern open bus-systems allow real-time processing, through having distributed intelligence in the field. Key Discrete Automation Protocols include Profibus, DeviceNet, ControlNet, Modbus, Interbus-S, Melsecnet and CC-Link. Each Protocol has its own characteristics and defines a specific cable type for communication.” Belden has the right cables to provide signal transmission solutions throughout industry. And we are continuing to invest. Some of our recently introduced products include:

7000x series of PROFIBUS PA cables for process automation

Belden - Industrial Ethernet Cables                                         March 2008

Whether you specify copper or fiber optic cables, peak network efficiency and reliability are achieved with Belden® DataTuff® Industrial Ethernet cables.

DataTuff Cables with Belden's Patented Bonded-Pair Technology offer the benefit of Installable
Performance

Many versions of DataTuff cables feature Belden’s patented Bonded-Pair technology. This construction feature affixes the conductor insulation of the cable pairs along their longitudinal axes to ensure that no performance-robbing gaps can develop between the conductor pairs. Since no gaps can occur, and the conductor-to-conductor spacing, or centricity, is always uniform, the cable offers excellent and consistently reliable electrical performance — even after the cable has been subjected to the bending, pulling and twisting that is inherent in the installation process. Belden calls this unique after-installation performance capability Installable
Performance.

TrayOptic® Cables Feature Laser Certified Fiber (LCFÍ) and Water-Blocking Capability

When the installation demands the combination of sophisticated fiber optic technology and rugged durability, look to Belden’s line of TrayOptic indoor/ outdoor fiber optic cables — now upgraded to include a water-blocking agent. All TrayOptic products also utilise Laser Certified Fiber to handle Gigabit Ethernet light sources and any expanded bandwidth requirements.

These Belden products are RoHS compliant, plus they are manufactured to the industry’s highest standards of quality, utilising the most advanced equipment, systems, controls and processes.

Belden Expands its Access Control Composite Cable Line            Sept 2007

Belden® Expands Its Access Control Composite Cable Line, Offering More Cable Designs

Belden Access Control Composite cables enable more cost-effective
security installations, offering installers additional labor-saving advantages.
Whether your installation takes place in a commercial building, a hospital, school, corporate site or government facility, Belden Access Control cables bring a whole new level of ease and convenience to the work site.

Features and Benefits
In general, the use of composite cables will decrease your labor costs since they are easier and quicker to install than the more labor-intensive procedure of bundling and pulling individual cables. Belden now offers a new jacketed multi-conductor/multi-pair composite (see Part No. 658AFJ) and a number of Banana Peel® composites.

The Belden Access Control Banana Peel Composites feature a patented design that affixes the individual cables to a center spline, eliminating the need for an overall jacket. Without the overall jacket:

A whole step in the termination process is eliminated.
The individual cable components are all instantly identifiable, they are color-coded by application, they have the application printed on the individual jackets, and they are ready for termination.
The Banana Peel composite has a smaller OD than traditional composites. This improves the cable's overall bend radius for faster, easier installation. A smaller OD also means a smaller size conduit.
Breakout versatility is assured since the individual cables can be connected to the junction box or can be rerouted to the point of termination.
Experience and studies have shown installing one cable instead of four saves time and money. In one Belden-sponsored study
involving Belden unjacketed Banana Peel Composites, the savings equaled or exceeded 31% for labor and 14% in end-user costs.

For more information about these products please contact the Maser sales team on 1300 130 722 or visit the web site: www.belden.com.

Part 1—A Simple Guide to Coaxial Cable                             15 May 2007

What is Coaxial Cable (coax) Is typically identified or classified according to its
impedance or RG-type. For example, a 75-ohm coax or an RG-6 type coax. RG, or
Radio Guide, is the manner that the military used to identify transmission lines. The RG number specified the physical construction, materials, physical, mechanical and electrical requirements of the cable This methodology is now obsolete and the military has changed to “slash sheets” for identification. For example, RG-58C is nowM17/155-00001 or M17/28-RG058. Today, the RG number has become a generic identifier, telling the user of it’s general construction and electrical properties, but not specific enough to compare attributes from one product to another

Construction:
A coax cable consists of two conductors separated by a dielectric material. The center
conductor and the outer conductor, or shield, are configured in such a way that they form concentric cylinders with a common axis. Hence the term and name co-axial

The center conductor may be made of various materials and constructions.
Most common constructions are solid or seven-strand conductors. Solid conductors
are used in permanent, infrequently handled or low flex applications and stranded
conductors are used in flexible cable applications. Common materials include copper, tinned or silver plated copper, copper clad steel and copper clad aluminum. Because of a phenomena known as skin-effect, copper clad materials may be used in higher frequency applications ( Foxtel Digital ) to improve tensile strength and reduce weight and cost. (Skin-effect is the result of higher frequency signals propagating along the outermost surface, or skin, of the conductor.

The insulation, or dielectric material, is used to provide separation between the
conductors. It is desirable that the material has stable electrical characteristics across
a broad frequency range. The most common materials used are polyethylene (PE),
polypropylene (PP), fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE.The materials may be used in their natural form (solid), or injected with air
bubbles (foam or cellular) to improve the dielectric constant and electrical properties of the material and cable

The outer conductor is typically made from a number of smaller aluminum or copper
conductors combined together. These conductors are woven together to form a braid around the dielectric core. For higher frequency applications, a second braid or
aluminum foil tapes are often added to improve attenuation and shield effectiveness.

The jacket material serves as a protective covering from the environment and may also serve to add in the overall flame retardant properties of the cable. Typical materials include polyvinyl chloride (PVC), PE, FEP

Belden Industrial Products                                                   30 October 2006

Fieldbus is an all-digital, serial, two-way communications protocol 9HS1) that standardises the interconnection of field devices at a communications rate of 31.25 kB/s. The field devices are made accessible to
communication networks, through use of linking devices.

Fieldbus users can reduce the amount of 1/0 and control equipment plus they can use few intrinsically safe (IS) barriers, cabinets, cables and connectors. End users have the freedom to implement tightly integrated digital
