Seminars: Maser Defence recently ran the first of what will be a series of short seminars. The first was held in Canberra and looked at ways of improving the current Defence Portable SATCOM capability using COTS products. We are currently putting together the seminar schedule for 2012. The first will be in March and will include a discussion of a revolutionary approach to the problem of satisfying the antenna requirements of today's mobile land platforms. Please contact us if you wish to be kept informed of the seminar programme for 2012. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Maser Defence Capabilities

Maser Defence, part of the Maser Group, is based in Sydney, where its prime business is providing a range of proven military communications capabilities for use in land, air and maritime applications. This is supported by specialist antenna products, mast systems, satellite communications equipment, military cables and microwave components.

Key suppliers include Cobham Antenna Systems, Cobham Mast Systems, Cobham Technical Services (formerly ERA in the UK), and Scotty (a narrowband multi-channel duplex satcom system). Maser Defence is the sole Australian supplier for each of these manufacturers.

Our broader product line includes specialist areas such as night vision and thermal imaging systems from Summit Night Vision Systems, who provide high resolution NVG’s including military grade L3 products manufactured under licence. Summit provides a comprehensive range of night vision equipment including Infra-red, thermal imaging systems and CASA certified aviation night vision goggles. Summit also offer Night fighting weapon accessories including Laser Aiming Devices, illuminators and Tactical Rail Accessory Management Systems.

Services offered by Maser Defence include telephone and on-line product support, antenna performance simulation, training and seminars.

Cobham’s Multi-Mission Antenna System—providing an efficient solution in hostile environments

A major problem facing land forces in hostile environments is the damage caused to a vehicles’ communication and CIED systems when close to a detonated explosive device, or when returning fire.

Most vulnerable to battle damage are the various antennas required to protect soldiers from today’s RF/CIED threat. This problem is magnified by the number of antennas required to support the various radio and ECM systems in many of today’s military vehicles.

Cobham Antenna System’s Multi-Mission Antenna System (MMAS) provides a solution to both issues. Securely located on a common vehicle mount, the antenna element uses Cobham’s unique Bayonet style fixing arrangement. This enables the platform’s VHF, UHF and SatCom communications to be quickly fitted or replaced in a matter of seconds.

End users save on energy and maintenance costs with Dialight’s LED High Bay fixture

Dialight’s new LED High Bay fixture, the newest member of the Durosite family continues to deliver significant energy and maintenance savings versus conventional lighting technologies.

Operating on just 150 watts, the powder coated aluminum High Bay is designed to perform for 10 years in even the most demanding applications—three times as long as traditional HID fixtures, and nearly twice as long as fluorescent solutions.

Environmentally the LED High Bay fixture is completely free of hazardous materials. including mercury and boasts an annual energy savings that equates to over two metric tons of CO2 saved per fixture per year.

Dialight Introduces Highly Energy Efficient StreetSENSE™ RS Series LED Roadway Sign Light

StreetSENSE RS Series  from Dialight effectively directs light where it’s needed, reduces energy consumption and dramatically cuts maintenance costs by eliminating the constant replacement of expensive outdated mercury vapor and metal halide fixtures.

Dialight has recently introduced d the StreetSENSE RS Series LED Roadway Sign Light, a highly energy efficient “green” solution that provides unmatched quality of light, effectively directs illumination, reduces energy consumption and cost, and dramatically cuts maintenance requirements. The highly efficient, long lasting StreetSENSE RS Series solves the problem that sign owners face of constantly replacing their expensive mercury vapor and metal halide fixtures.

The Dialight StreetSENSE RS Series combines precision optics and the latest in advanced, patent-pending LED technology to meet the most demanding specification criteria for road sign lighting. Designed to easily replace outdated mercury vapor and metal halide fixtures, the StreetSENSE RS Series’ ultra-low power consumption delivers 60-70% energy cost savings over the typical 250+W fixtures commonly used for road sign lighting.

Operating on considerably less energy to deliver superior, efficiently directed light makes the StreetSENSE RS Series the optimum cost effective alternative to old fashioned conventional lighting. Its mercury-free, energy-efficient operation is also far more environmentally friendly, reducing CO2 emissions, one of the primary greenhouse gases contributing to global warming.

The Dialight StreetSENSE RS Series’ rugged construction, lamp assembly and housing make these LED fixtures weather and corrosion resistant and impervious to roadway vibration and shock. Their projected service life of ten years, with more than 70% lumen maintenance after 60,000 hours of operation, essentially eliminates the need for lamp replacement. As a result, the StreetSENSE RS Series LED solution is virtually maintenance free. This slashes both equipment and labor costs over conventional lighting systems, and lessens maintenance workers’ exposure to risk on busy highways.

Dialight offers complete fixture assemblies for new, retrofit or complete replacement applications including a unique LED retrofit cover assembly kit option that will adapt to most installed conventional fixture boxes. The retrofit makes the conversion simple, fast, easy and low cost.

The Dialight StreetSENSE RS Series 70 Watt and 100 Watt LED fixtures are available in Cool White and Neutral White. For further information contact Maser Ph: 1300 130 722 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Peak Network and Efficiency achieved with Belden DataTuff Industrial Ethernet Cables

Over the past five years or so, Ethernet has moved increasingly from the office environment into the industrial world – mainly for control and automation applications. But the two environments couldn’t differ more: the office environment offers its cabling system a relatively safe harbor and should a signal transmission fault occur, retries are generally acceptable. The industrial world presents a different reality: the cabling system can be integral to a harsh and hazardous environment and yet there’s no margin for error since the cables typically carry signals between devices

to make events happen on a very exacting schedule.

To ensure successful Ethernet signal transmissions in an industrial environment you need high performance cables designed specifically for the environment. Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) Cat 5e UTP Ethernet cable just can’t stand up. It is quite fragile when compared to an industrial-grade cable, meaning that any number of stresses and challenges encountered in the industrial environment could result in one of the classic failure models: catastrophic failure, intermittent operation, incremental failure and degradation of performance. The result could be a loss of data, process downtime or a drop in the safety level of your operation. Belden’s answer is to offer a complete range

of high quality, high reliability DataTuff® Industrial Ethernet cables that have been designed for industrial use and tested using state-of-the-art testing equipment. Belden DataTuff cables are also field-proven relative to exceptional day-in/day-out performance.

So, even if your cabling system is exposed to the following conditions you can turn to Belden for the right solution:

Oil, sunlight and gasoline

Temperature variations

Abrasion, crushing and burial

Flexing

Presence of EMI/RFI (electromagnetic interference or radio frequency interference)

MSHA mining approval

Red jackets designating safety network
