NSW Power Station Lights The LED Way

Maser Communications have finalised an agreement with one of NSW’s largest power stations to supply Dialight Industrial LED fixtures for all future general area and task lighting applications.

Earlier this year the plant undertook a trial to determine whether LED fixtures were a viable, cost effective alternative to the on-going issues with their incumbent lighting solution. In consultation with Maser Communications, several areas of the plant were selected and the LEDPAK and SAFESITE series were deployed into the field alongside traditional fittings. “To say the customer was blown away by our light’s performance is an under-statement” says Maser Communications General Manager, Matt Young. “Apart from the obvious benefits associated with LED lighting; a reduction in operating & maintenance costs, shock & vibration proof and instant on/off - the improvement in light quality was the major benefit that the customer could not ignore. The rugged solid-state design of these LED fixtures creates a new era where failed lamps and expensive re-lamping costs will become a thing of the past.”

LED technology continues to improve and the expanding range of fixtures available from Maser Communications offer ground breaking performance and reliability for the Industrial end-user. The LEDPAK series offers a highly viable alternative to general area fluorescent lighting for walkways, gantries, workshops & storerooms while the LEDBRIGHT and SAFESITE series come in 150W and 250W equivalents for specific task, worksite or access illumination.

Dialight LED's - New Industrial & Commercial Options

Thanks to the rapid development of LED lighting, solutions for a wide range of highly demanding commercial and industrial applications are now streaming onto the market. These alternatives to   fluorescent and high intensity discharge (HID) lighting are safer, more efficient, longer lasting and have lower maintenance costs, says David Sims of Maser. Maser is the Australasian agent for US LED lighting manufacturer Dialight, a company with decades of experience in applied LED technology.

Applications

Sims says Dialight has launched two principal types of LED alternatives for conventional industrial and commercial luminaries targeting fluorescents and HID low bay lighting   fixtures. There are wide ranging industrial and commercial applications which can benefit   from these new Dialight LED lighting alter-natives, says Sims. “They are better suited to food preparation areas because they’re an ultra-low maintenance, waterproof and washable lighting solution that does not contain glass which can contaminate food and packaging if there is a breakage. “And when it comes to power generation and heavy industrial manufacturing, Dialight luminaries offer vibration-proof, impact-resistant lighting which does not suffer the drawbacks of conventional lighting. “Many other commercial and industrial workplaces including hazardous areas such as petrochemical, oil, gas and mining workplaces can gain from our intrinsically safe, low energy, low heat LED lighting solutions,” he says.

Savings and safety

“Not only do Dialight LED replacements for fluorescent and HID light fittings provide end-users with considerable maintenance and power cost savings, they also produce less carbon emissions because they last tens of thousands of hours longer. They also contain fewer harmful chemicals such as mercury and are much more environmentally friendly than conventional light sources,” says Sims.

However, power savings are not the only important aspect of LED lighting. In many sites it is both costly and difficult to maintain lighting. With the extremely long life of LEDs there is not only less risk of accidents in the workplace posed by accessing lighting for lamp replacements, but also less cost for hiring access equipment required to undertake such maintenance.” LED lighting can be switched on and off whenever you want to,” says Sims. “Not only do LEDs come up to full bright-ness straight away, they do not require a cooling-down period like HID lamps. This HID lamp cooling period can produce dangerous situations especially around certain industrial processes when areas have been left in darkness after the power has failed momentarily. Another LED advantage is that they are not depleted by frequent switching like fluorescents.”

Development

LEDs are now coming to the forefront of lighting technology for a number of reasons and the research and development into LED lighting reflects this. As product manager for Dialight, Sims says the company has been a leader in this respect for a number of years. “Dialight has developed and manufactured LED products since their inception over 35 years ago. In recent years, it has been more involved in LED lighting, manufacturing components including precision lighting optics and drivers for its lighting products. “Besides Dialight  fluorescent and HID lighting alternatives, the company also makes luminaries for highly demanding applications such as IP rated obstruction and hazard beacons for use in hazardous areas and for airport warning lighting. “Dialight has shipped over 23 million LEDs in lighting products and from its early days has supplied the world’s largest base of installed LED traffic lights,” says Sims. “That is why we at Maser believe Dialight LED products are proven to be efficient and durable lighting solutions that will benefit a wide range of industrial and commercial businesses.”

LED Lighting Effective and Efficient For Plant Operations

LED lighting is becoming the new effective and efficient way for plants to operate. Installation of LED’s such as Dialights SafeSite and Ledpak series allow hazardous location facilities to improve its overall lighting, reduced its energy consumption and also access many additional business and operational benefits by replacing its traditional lighting with LED fixtures. Some of these key benefits include:

1) No More Need for Flash Lights

Prior to installing LED lighting at this petroleum refinery the quality and colour rendition of the high pressure sodium (HPS) lighting was so poor that employees had to make use of a flash light at night, even with a direct fixture above the equipment.
At Dialight their LED fixtures are designed specifically for hazardous locations around the world from oilfields and chemical processing to mining, flour mills and power stations. That means there’s plenty of evidence that their rugged, solid state design SafeSite® illumination fixtures can deliver significant value in these locations whether in new installations or retro-fitted. Designed to be virtually impervious to shock and vibration, they make expensive re-lamping costs a thing of the past.

2) Improved Lighting

Light pollution is greatly reduced with Dialight’s lighting fixtures which utilise the latest LED technology with proprietary optics designed to focus light directionally so that they illuminate only the required area, such as straight walkways, avoiding adjacent and upward light spill.
Also the efficient optics used in LED Hazloc products like SafeSite® result in more light reaching the target area compared to the previous HPS installation. They also result in lower wattage LED fixtures being required and a lower total number of fixtures being used in the complete installation, so saving energy and installation costs.

3) Low cost of ownership

The combination of reduced energy consumption, a 50% cut in the number of lighting fixtures and a fixture life warranty of 5 years with over 50,000 operating hours and the resulting reduction in maintenance clearly produces a low cost of ownership.

Additional Benefits

Use of LEDs opens up access to many other benefits in hazardous location installations. One is their excellent performance in low operating temperatures. Dialight’s LED fixtures are rated down to -40°C and still provide 100% of the rated lumen output, unlike fluorescents whose output decreases rapidly at low temperatures. LEDs achieve 100% light output from the second they are switched on. This ‘instant-on’ ability can be very significant in hazardous locations that use independent generators. These can be prone to blackout and brown outs, resulting in the need for additional emergency lights. By fitting LEDs to the centra battery or standby power systems expensive downtime and unnecessary exposure to danger can be avoided.
Instant-on ability also creates more opportunities to save energy. LEDs can be coupled with occupancy sensors and either completely switched off or reduced to a lower illumination level when no one is present around the installation.
This not only reduces energy but also dramatically extends the operating life of the lighting system.
